Waidate – Arm Protection
O-yoroi was worn by the Samurai class of Feudal Japan. It consists of two parts of which Waidate is one of these. The upper part of this arm protection was made of a solid iron plate covered with leather.
The second part was lamellar. Simply put, Waidate is a separate metal plate protecting the open right side of the armor. Experts still disagree about the real reason for using a solid plate instead of lamellar for this arm defense armor.
This is said to be bunching up and that it creates a gap when pinched by the other parts of the Samurai armor. This is why there is still a need for using lamellar skirt as a Samurai suit to protect the wearer’s hips, abdomen, and thighs.
Battle Preparations
Earlier armors were made in one piece. This protects all of the shoulders, neck, and torso. However, it was not enough to protect all of the body parts of the soldiers who fight the battles during that period of time.
During the battle, this Samurai Armor was put on first before the rest of the other Samurai Armor parts. This was fastened with cords tied around the body.
The O-yoroi was too bulky and used heavy armor. It was also expensive which means retainers and lesser warriors were not given the chance to wear it but, used do maru and haramaki instead.
These two armors have more skirt plates; closely fitting the body so that there would be no need for armed defense. This was popular during the late 18th through the early 19th century. This was made of materials that include: iron, leather, and silk.
There were some weaknesses in the design of cavalry armor even if the real reason for this is for protection.
It was too heavy and the box-like shape meant this restricts the movement of the swordsman during battle.
One of the things that Japanese Samurai Armor is known for using lightweight materials that allows the warriors to move faster on the battlefield. Waidate serves as a right flank arm defense protector.
It must be kept in mind that Japanese arm defense armor was considered aesthetically pleasing to the eye but, it was designed to build fear in the hearts of the enemies.
This combination of sophisticated techniques and rare materials is what makes waidate special.
Waidate Use
Waidate is simply known as a side plate for easier identification of its use. There is more to the world of Japanese weapons and armor than sword-wielding Samurais.
Even protective armor is perfect to use by exotic characters. Even the use of fans to give a signal to command an army looks impressive to look at. Imagine how the Samurai looks when he wears his full battle gear.
Each part of the body is covered for protection to ensure that he will avoid getting hurt by any other means. Samurai or Bushi are members of a professional set of warriors who belong to clans.
They play a huge role in the history of Medieval Japan which explains why there is a need for ample protection when in battle.
