Shikoro

Shikoro – Basic Ninja Tools

Shikoro was one of the Ninja Tools that Ninja held onto. Ninja Shikoro was categorized as a kaiki tool or in Japanese these means to open. These Ninja Weapons were used to open closed doors or fences.

Almost all of Kaikis were similar to carpenter tools used when building a house because of its shape and primary function. Ninja Shikoro can be concealed because of its compact shape and size.

Another way of looking at these Shinobi Weapons is its close resemblance to a double-edged saw. In terms of length, Shikoro is from 160 to 210 mm in length. This weighs more than 100 grams.

These were so small that it was easy to hide. The use of this weapon needs a really strong force. Ninja could use the Shikoro to make a hole on a wooden fence to see what was going on inside or outside.

This tool was perfect for cutting a hole even through hardwood using its sharp edges. Sometimes these are used as rope cutters.

It was said that Ninjas bring from two to three Ninja Shikoro in every mission that they make. These are tools used for stabbing and slashing and fall under modified tool weapons used by Ninjas.

Shikoro

More than Just a Tool

This tool is not a Japanese throwing knife. Some people may perceive it that way because of its compact size. It cannot be denied that the short size version of this weapon can indeed look like it was made for knife throwing.

The use of Shikoro allowed Ninjas to create a hole that was wide enough on his end and a small hole on the other side of the wall. Ninja Shikoro can be turned one way and that way to bore a hole on their wall.

The occupants of the wall will not notice the Ninja busily boring a hole on the wall. Because of its shape, Shikoro is also referred to as Leaf saws. This has a dagger type handle.

A lot of weapons used by Ninjas were adapted from farming tools. There are far from those used by Shaolin monks in China. These are available in three sizes: small, medium and large.

The sizes explain how this was used. The large one was used to cut through hedges or open bolted doors. The small one was concealed in the lapel and sometimes used to break from jail or being imprisoned by the enemies.

Uses

This weapon was from the Edo period and considered a different version of the Ninja sword. There is another version of Shikoro which is long and thin. It can be folded up very small into a wooden handle resembling a penknife.

Ninjas place it inside their special pocket. Whenever there is a need to gain entry to buildings, rooms and similar structures, Shikoro fits this function with ease. These are designed to inflict maximum damage to whoever fights a Ninja.

Shikoro resembles Kunai which has practical uses like digging and for breaking and opening. Both edges of this weapon can cut through different kinds of material like bamboo, wood and even steel.

This tool was that efficient that a man can get through a shut door by cutting a hole on the close door. Ninjas can disguise as a tradesman with the help of this weapon. This is why the Ninjas can even trespass fortresses.

To show how efficient this tool is, it can cut through trees. Suffice to say that Ninjas used various devices that function as tools for defense as well as a way to attack the enemies. The clothes served as a keeper of these tools.

In the use of the special cloth alone the Ninja can strategize and carry different tools to fight Ninjas. To overcome low walls, Ninja would lean their sword against the wall, step on the hilt and climb over the wall.

In other words, tools like these are used as shims. A shim is a wedge or something similar to this to fill a space. Because of its spikes that exist around its edges this increases its fatality factor upon direct hits.
