Tanto Knife
The Japanese Tanto first made its appearance around the 8th century during the Heian Period. These first Tanto were almost always used as functional weapons and as a result did not much artistic quality. Another result of the their functional use was that not many survived from this period.
This Tanto is a Shirasaya Hira-Zukuri style. The Tanto and all of its components are authentically made in the traditional style.
Blade: The blade of the sword has been constructed from T10 tool steel. The steel has been thoroughly refined and clay tempered. It is sharp and full tang. When the blade is quenched the sword is covered with a clay solution, except for the edge of the blade. The blade is then heated and quenched in water. Since the Ha cools much more quickly than the rest of the blade the molecules in the steel expand and force the softer steel to fold back.
Saya (sheath): The Saya is metallic burgundy red hardwood. The saya fits seamlessly into the tsuka.
Tsuka (handle): The entire Tsuka itself is also metallic red hardwood and the blade is full tang.
