The Strong Katana Blade

1095 carbon steel is used for the blade of this Katana. This has 0.95% carbon content which makes the blade very tough. The blade is dyed in red & black acid to add to the sword’s aesthetic appeal.

The Japanese Katana is sharpened and has a full Tang blade. With that, it can endure damages from cutting various targets. To make cutting practice easier, it also has a Bohi to decrease the sword’s overall weight.

The Fittings and Wrapping of the Tsuka

On the Tsuka, there are fittings that are all made of high-quality copper. These include the Tsuba, Fuchi, Kashira, and the Menuki. The fittings not only decorate the Tsuka, but these also have various functions.

The Tsuba protects the hand from strikes. The Menuki and Kashira help maintain the sword’s balance. For the Menuki, this is an ornamental fitting that is placed under the Tsuka.

The Tsuka Ito is black and red, while the Samegawa is black to match the blade’s color. Aside from aesthetic purposes, these prevent accidents and technical failure.

Measurements and Accessories of the Katana

The Katana blade measures 72 centimeters for the length and 3.2 centimeters for its width. For the length of its Tsuka, it is 27 centimeters. The sword weighs a total of 1.59 kilograms.

The Saya of this Katana is a mixture of red and black paint; plus, it features a buffalo horn. This samurai sword sheath protects the blade from environmental harm and the sword should be in the saya when is not used. The silk sword bag is also present for added storage, and it further protects the sword when kept.

The Samurai and his Katana – An Inseparable Combination

During Japan’s pre-industrial period, the Katana was more than a sword. According to the Shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa, it was the heart and soul of the Samurai. This also meant that it represented its owner.

With that, a huge part of the Japanese culture revolved around the Samurai and their sword.

In ancient Japan, only those from the Samurai class had the privilege to wield the Katana. Aside from being their weapon, this symbolized their position in the society. Due to its importance, the Katana was even set in a room of a newly born Samurai child. Upon his death, a trusted person would set his sword by his side.

The Daimyo believed that even after death, a Samurai warrior could use his sword in the afterlife. Generally, the Katana was also one of the deadliest edged pieces in history. Although prominent, the true origins of the weapon are still not clear.
