The Katana and the Daisho
The Katana is among the traditional Japanese swords of the Samurai. It is one of the most prominent weapons of feudal Japan. Its blade was curved and it had a Tsuka that was long enough for two-handed use. It became more popular when changes in warfare happened during the Mongol Invasions of Japan.
Close combat battles became more common which required quick movements. This encouraged the change of the design of the swords. It led to the curved blade of the Katana. This allowed for easier drawing of the sword and short response times for the user.

The Shirasaya refers to the plain wooden sword that consisted of a simple Saya and Tsuka. It wa made of Nurizaya wood. In English, the word Shirasaya translates to “white scabbard” since it describes its plain features. This had no fittings but it had the Mekugi pins.
The use of the Shirasaya dates back to feudal Japan. After centuries of conflict, the government established rules to maintain the peace. Along with that, they banned the Samurai class from wearing their swords in public.
