The Blade of the Ninjato

The Ninjato has a clay tempered blade which makes it stronger and more flexible. This helps retain the sword’s sharp edge. The blade is made of T10 steel which is known for being one of the strongest types of steel. This makes it one of the best choices for cutting soft and medium targets. It also features a Kiriha Zukuri Kissaki.

The Kiriha Zukuri Kissaki is a feature used on the first straight swords in Japanese history which were used for stabbing more than slashing.

The blade is dyed in purple acid and its surface is Hadori polished. The polishing process makes the sword’s Hamon appear brighter.

This Ninja sword feature a full tang blade with a sharpened edge, it is excellent for Tameshigiri. The double Bohi decreases the heaviness of the sword.

Dimensions and Accessories of the Ninjato

This Ninjato weighs 1.66 kilograms. When it comes to the blade, the length is 72 centimeters and its width is 3.2 centimeters. The Tsuka is 27 centimeters long.

For the Accessories, these include a straight, black Saya with an engraved dragon. It also comes with a silk sword bag for added protection when keeping the sword.

Tsuka Wrap and Fittings

For the handle of the Ninjato, it has a silver Samegawa. On top of this is a black and white silk steel. The fittings include the Tsuba, Menuki, Kashira, and Fuchi. These are all made of high-quality copper.

The fittings provide proper balance for the sword to make the Ninjato easier to use. The Tsuba also protects the hands from the opponent’s strikes.

The Tsuka Ito and Samegawa help prevent slipping and accidental cuts.

The Sword of the Shinobi

The Ninjato is one of the known weapons of the Shinobi. It was straight and shorter than the swords of the Samurai. The main purpose of the Ninjato was to stab opponents instead of slaying them. This is why its blade did not feature a curve.

This sword was easy to use in narrow spaces, making it excellent for close combat use. Another reason why the Ninjato was straight is that it was more than a killing weapon.

There is no clear evidence for the existence of the Ninjato before the 20th century. However, some people believe that some replicated swords are based on the design of the Chokuto or the Wakizashi.

The Tsuba of the Ninjato was squared and often larger than the common ones that can be found in the Katana. There were several theories on why the Ninjato had these features. One was that the Shinobi used the sword as a tool.

It was said that the Shinobi would lean the Ninjato against a wall and use this as as a step when climbing. The Shinobi would then retrieve their swords with the Saya cord called Sageo.
