The Tanto in the Era of Northern and Southern Courts

During the time of the Northern and Southern courts, the blade of the Tanto became thinner. Specifically, the thinness was evident along the Omote and Uri. There were also wider points on the blade, such as between the Mune and Ha.

At this time, there were two styles prevalent of the Hamon. One was the older style which was artistic and subtle, while the newer one had a more popular style.

At the start of the Muromachi era, fighting and battles ensued. This led to the mass production of blades, equating to higher demand, lower quality swords. Blades that underwent custom forging were still considered exceptional. Yet average blades suffered severely.

At the end of this era, the standard blade became narrower, and its curve, more shallow.
