Kaginawa – Grappling Hook Weapon

Kaginawa is a combination of the words Kagi which means hook and Nawa which means rope. Ninja Kaginawa is simply a Ninja Weapon use as a grappling hook during feudal Japan.

Even Samurais and their retainers used this weapon. Foot soldiers also used this aside from Ninjas. There are certain configurations made on this tool. There are one to four hooks found in different kinds of Kaginawa.

Kaginawa was basically used as a tool for climbing through high places. Ninja Kaginawa was a simple Ninja Tool. An iron hook was attached to a long rope of about 5 meters long. The Ninjas threw the hook on a high point.

Once it attaches into something they climb to their planned destination along with the rope. At times Ninjas used sickle in place. This tool when swung can hit someone and cause lethal damage.

There are times that Ninjas tie their enemies with the use of this Ninja Weapon. They tie their enemies to a boat or pier giving them time to escape when there is a need to retreat.

Kaginawa as Gag

When reading through pages of Japanese history there are text references to the use of gags as a way of subduing the enemy. Traditionally, the use of a wood or metal gag referred to as Sarugutsuwa or Monkey Bit does the job successfully.

This is inserted into the captured enemy’s mouth to immobilize him. Some versions use a padded ball that is inserted into the mouth.

Some variations include rows of small needle-like spikes that prevents the victim from talking or else suffer from getting his tongue bitten into with this sharp object. A gagged individual can be easily led like an animal on a leash.

Some of the weapons used look similar to fish hooks. Kaginawa enters the picture as the hook used to capture the enemy. some Ninja were also trained on how to maximize the use of this tool as a weapon and could fight several men at a time with the use of a Kaginawa.
