Tanto Knife
The Tanto is believed to be made during the Heian Period (around the 8th century). These first Tantos were almost always used as functional samurai sword and as a result did not much artistic quality. Another result of the their functional use was that not many survived from this period.
The HRC hardness of the blade edge is 62. Blade has been clay tempered. It is covered with a clay solution, except for the edge of the blade. The blade is then heated and quenched in water. Since the Ha cools much more quickly than the rest of the blade the molecules in the steel expand and force the softer steel to fold back. As a result, a natural clear hamon can be seen on the blade. It is visual evidence of the makers effort to produce the finest blade work. From a practical point of view, the hamon is a visible indication of a differentially heat-treated blade
Blade: The blade of the sword has been constructed from T10 tool steel. It has been folded 13 times creating 8192 layers.
Saya (sheath): The Saya is high quality rosewood hardwood with buffalo horn finish. The saya fits seamlessly into the tsuka.
Tsuka (handle): The entire Tsuka is also made of high quality natural rosewood with two mekugi pins, one of them a bamboo pin, the other a brass hollow pin.
