The Jian – Historical and Modern Uses

The classic Juan is a double-edged straight bladed sword. It was used in ancient China, 2,500 years in the past. In folklore, the Jian is known as The Gentleman’s Weapon, and is part of the four primary weapons.

The Jian has various differences in length, weight, and balance. This all depends on the period they appeared in. Despite this, the general purpose of this sword is to be a multipurpose thrust and cut weapon. It isn’t supposed to specialize in just a single form of use.

Ancient wielders had their own way of trying the blade of the Jian. This process was called the Shi zhan, and their targets were Caoren or grass men. It was something similar to the Japanese Tameshigiri. However, Shi zhan was not formalized like its Japanese counterpart.

Today, a lot of Chinese martial arts train heavily with the use of the Jian. Popular Jian forms include the Kunwa Jian, Sancai Jian, Wudang Xuan Men Jian, and the Taiji Jian. Also, a lot of the contemporary Jian are the flexible Wushu Jian or the Tai Chi Jian. These are often used for performance or ceremonial purposes.
