Its black and white silk ito or tsuka-ito is the handle wrap or cord. Its purpose is both functional and aesthetic. The ito reinforces the tsuka, preventing any technical failure from occuring. As for the red samegawa, it mainly protects the tsuka. It also works by keeping your sweating hands dry and allows for proper gripping.
Its fittings include the menuki, tsuba, kashira, and fuchi which are all made of metal. The fuchi is the hilt collar and is found between the tsuba and tsuka.
