Being a clay tempered Wakizashi, it has a different kind of solidity and hardness. This is due to the non-uniform spreading out of the clay slurry. With this, it provides the Wakizashi with a flexible and forgeable spine.
The Kiriha Zukuri is a blade type featuring a Shinogi on each side. It is an ancient form that appeared during the end of the Heian era.

These protect the Tsuka: the Ito prevents issues from occurring. As for the Samegawa, it keeps your hands from sweating, leaving them dry.
What is great about these is that both prevent your hands from slipping over the Tsuka. This is important especially during practice or training.

The Wakizashi – A Samurai Warriors Auxiliary Sword
The Wakizashi is a weapon used as far back as the 15th and 16th centuries. It was the backup sword of the Samurai, and best for close quarter battles.
The Wakizashi also had other uses: for beheading an enemy, and to commit Seppuku. It was among the few short swords available for the Samurai. These were the Chisa Katana and the Yoroi Toshi.
Wakizashi was a term that was not specific for any blade length. It was an abbreviation Wakizashi No Katana or sword thrust on one’s side. It was a term used for all companion swords.
Yet it wasn’t until the Edo period when Japanese leaders tried regulating rules. They wanted to control the types of swords and only some social groups could wear them. It was then that the official length of the Katana and Wakizashi were made.
