Chinese Guandao Sword
This unique version of the Guandao has a sharpened blade of 1060 carbon; It tapers to the spine, yet retains plenty of spine width for strength and its tapers to a long and uninterrupted slope from the ridge to edge, which is ideal to create an edge that can pass through a target with minimum drag from the blade. With the correct cutting technique and power, it can cut down medium target (bamboo) in one single strike.
The guard plate and handle pommel are of brass and the entire handle is high quality rosewood. The literal translation of Dadao into English is large knife. Large indeed. The origins of the Guandao are difficult to discern, but sources exist which detail orders from the Qing Dynasty to issue a set number of Guandao swords to its military units.
The mass-adoption of the Guandao as a Chinese military weapon occurred in the 1920s and 1930s – it was an easily produced blade and it hearkened back to a glorious Imperial past. That symbolism gave it a place alongside the rifle with which Chinese troops would resist the invading Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War. A synthetic leather scabbard holster is included.
